Cleveland is the second largest city in Ohio and is known for music, theaters and museums.

Named after Gen. Moses Cleaveland, the area’s surveyor, Cleveland was the first settlement founded by the Connecticut Land Co. in 1796. The city was misspelled on the map and is why Cleveland is spelled the way it is today. Cleveland was incorporated as a city on March 6, 1836.

During the 1800s, Cleveland grew into a commercial center as the Erie Canal helped connect the city to the Atlantic Ocean and other cities along the lake.

By the latter half of the century, Cleveland became an industrial city, with large deposits of coal and iron ore.

In 1936, Cleveland hosted Great Lakes Exposition to commemorate the centennial of Cleveland’s incorporation. The event drew millions of visitors during its two year run. After World War II, the city’s population reached 1 million people in 1950.

Cleveland attractions include: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, West Side Market, Cleveland Botanical Garden, Lake View Cemetery and Playhouse Square Center.

Cleveland has three professional sports teams: the Indians (MLB), Browns (NFL) and Cavaliers (NBA). The Cavaliers have won Cleveland’s most recent title, the NBA championship in 2016. However, the Indians now hold the longest title drought in MLB, not having won the World Series in 69 years.
